There’s something really appealing about staying at a hotel with your partner. And it doesn’t even have to be a hotel in another major city. It can be a hotel in the city where you live. Getting away from the home, which to most translates to housework, ferrying children about and the general day to day, can bring you closer and reconnect you with your partner and the things you used to be able to indulge in. So don’t wait until annual holidays come around, book into a lovely hotel in your home town now.
According to the General Manager of Park Hyatt Melbourne, Sholto Smith, many returning guests have a ‘couples weekend’ as a regular treat. “We have many guests who stay three or four times a year, just for a weekend getaway. It’s a wonderful opportunity to reconnect,” he said.
So what’s the key to a great couples weekend? Consider these handy tips.
Take “comfortable” clothes
No – not old trackie pants and a tee shirt. The trick is to pack clothes you feel confident in wearing. Avoid taking anything you’ve just bought and haven’t worn before. – especially important for lingerie or a dinner dress.
No talking about the kids
It’s good to make a pact to not talk about the kids for the entire weekend. And if you don’t have kids, no talking about the pets either. As for you grandparents – the grandkids are off limits too! Talk about what interests the both of you outside the family. It will take you back to the good old days.
No tech zone
Even a more difficult task than not talking about kids is leaving technology at home. Yes – even the iPhone! Emergency details can be your hotel and room number. Seriously!
Preparation is key
It’s not about him – it’s about you. Let’s be honest, he probably doesn’t really care if you’re a bit hairy and have dry skin. But if you’re feeling great and confident it makes a huge difference. Waxing two-three days prior is always great, plus taking special care of your skin by exfoliating and moisturising.
Food and drink – but not too much
It’s hard to resist temptation, especially if you’re at a five star club lounge, but it’s difficult to be in a romantic mood and full of cheese and champers.
Here are some suggestions for your weekend nearcation. Included are five star hotels and where possible, we have recommended Club Lounge rooms as you get breakfast, nibbles and drinks early evening – plus you just feel that bit more special. There are also a few boutique hotels recommended and those with an asterisk have perks if you book via Mr and Mrs Smith.
