Porsche ambassadors in winning form

Angelique Kerber

Porsche ambassadors Angelique Kerber and Julia Görges have enjoyed a strong start to the 2018 WTA tour, each winning their first title for the year.

Kerber put on an excellent display to win the final of the WTA event in Sydney 6-4, 6-4 against local hero Ashleigh Barty to remain undefeated in 2018. In compiling an impressive nine wins from nine matches at the conclusion of the tournament on January 13, the 29-year-old German has put 2017, a year dominated by setbacks and self-doubt, firmly behind her.

The success in the Ken Rosewall Arena has returned Angelique Kerber to the illustrious circle of Top 20 players. She now sits at No. 16 in the new WTA rankings. In winning her eleventh career WTA title and the first since claiming the US Open in September 2016, she gave herself the nicest present of all ahead of her birthday on 18 January. “Winning this tournament is a dream,” said the former world No. 1 who was the runner-up at the tournament in the Australian metropolis back in 2014. “I’m so happy and proud to have won. The success makes my start to the new season perfect.”

Building on confidence gained so far this year, Kerber has advanced to round two of the Australian Open draw where she is set to face Croatian Donna Vekic.

Newly appointed Porsche Brand Ambassador Julia Görges has added a fifth WTA tournament title to her list of achievements, claiming the WTA tournament in Auckland, New Zealand on January 7. In an enthralling final, Görges played impressively to beat Dane Caroline Wozniacki 6-4, 7-6. The win has moved her up the world rankings to No. 12, the highest she has ever been.

“It feels amazing being able to follow up my consistency in the last few weeks and months here in Auckland. It makes me feel prouder,” said the 29-year old German. Görges continued her winning form in the opening round of the Australian Open, defeating American Sofia Kenin in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 before falling to Alizé Cornet of France in her second round clash. The loss ends an impressive string of 15 undefeated matches.

The opening week of competition in 2018 also saw Porsche Brand Ambassador Maria Sharapova reach the semi-finals at the Shenzhen Open in China ahead of her return to the Australian Open. Sharapova has advanced to round two of the grand slam where she will take on world number 15 Anastasija Sevastova.
