The King of Curves
Roland Mouret became a favourite go-to designer thanks to his now famous Galaxy dress worn by Victoria Beckham in the noughties. It was hailed as a new dress for its era, and has gone on to sell hundreds around the world ever since. Why it works? It’s a shift with a touch of va-va-voom and works on many body types.
That dress not only became the talk of Tinseltown, but it opened many more doors for the designer. He’s been dubbed the king of the body-con and continues to woo Hollywood’s hottest celebrities thanks to his figure flattering silhouettes.
From Scarlett Johansson to Dita Von Teese, the 52-year-old says that when it comes to dressing women the key is to consider their curves. The French-born and London-based fashion designer says, “I spend eight hours a day having to think and talk like a straight man. Scarlett Johansson and Dita Von Teese taught me women want dresses that give bra support, accentuate the waist and hug their curves.”
Here a few of the famous women that wear Mouret:
The bombshell beauty wore a peacock green silk organza spring dress to her premier last September. The glamorous 29-year-old looked fabulous in the flattering 50s inspired silhouette that showed off her curves in all the right places. Johannson has worn Mouret gowns to the Oscars and Golden Globes since 2005 – reporters even hailing her outfits as red carpet winner.
Dita Von Teese
The burlesque beauty knows how to add glamour to the simplest of outfits – just add a touch of vintage charm. She is a big fan of the Galaxy dress, rating it as highly as her prized Louboutins and Dior coat. Von Teese has been seen wearing various versions of the iconic dress from a low cut cherry red number to a black chic style.
Cameron Diaz recently wore a one shoulder/two-tone cocktail dress by Mouret to the launch of her latest film at the Barcelona Film Festival in June. The silver front panel and white back panel added to the dreaminess of this summer hit – the angular neckline and fan-like folds of fabrics created shift dress perfection.
The actress who grew up in Australia has long been a fan of Mouret’s outfits. In fact, the designer tells us Watts went into his LA store a decade ago and bought a dress off the rack without trying to pull any friends in high places strings. She recently wore a two-piece outfit from his 2014 spring collection to the GLAAD Media Awards – a strapless top with sash-like folds and a pair of straight leg cropped trousers in a shimmery pink peony colour.
Always taking an unconventional fashion route, Gyllenhaal turned heads at the Golden Globes a few years ago, stunning the crowds in a pink gown designed by Mouret. The dress featured a spectacular neckline, macramé like folds in the bodice and mermaid ruffles at the hemline – it made an elegant choice for the red carpet and was a definite showstopper.
